Case Study: Data-Driven Content Marketing and Multi-Channel Paid Acquisition

How search intent insights and targeted social campaigns captured prospective teaching students and supported new undergraduate program launches

UVA School of Education and Human Development
Overview

This initiative focused on leveraging search engine insights to develop high-impact inbound content backed by both organic SEO strategy and multi-channel paid media. After identifying significant search volume for state teacher licensure terms, we built a permanent, top-performing content hub that became one of the most heavily trafficked pages across the entire site.

Objectives
  • Capitalize on Organic Search Demand: Leverage Search Console and Keyword Planner data to create definitive content that drives ongoing, high-volume organic traffic.
  • Drive High-CTR Digital Paid Media: Execute targeted Google paid search and Facebook/Instagram ad campaigns to amplify reach and generate qualified inquiries.
  • Promote New Undergraduate Pathways: Raise widespread awareness for new B.S.Ed. degree programs.
  • Enable Direct Recruitment and Automation: Integrate search-driven content into admissions outreach and automated lead-nurturing workflows.
Approach

By analyzing data in Google Search Console and Google Keyword Planner, we spotted a major opportunity: a high frequency of prospective students searching specifically for “how to become a teacher in Virginia.” We used this insight to build an organic content anchor supported by targeted paid campaigns.

To execute this data-driven strategy, we:

  • Built a High-Traffic Inbound Content Hub: Published structured, search-optimized guide content (“How to Become a Teacher in Virginia”) in partnership with my content strategist colleague and the unit’s student intern, engineered to rank organically and provide a direct call-to-action for personalized admissions guidance.
  • Executed Targeted Google Search Campaigns: Launched 60 localized keywords built around the “how to become a teacher” query cluster, pairing them with tailored ad copy to capture active searchers.
  • Deployed Demographic Paid Social Ads: Conducted A/B creative testing across Facebook and Instagram feeds, stories, and Audience Network placements. Targeted demographics aged 18–60 based on interests, education levels, and parent status.
  • Optimized Channel Strategy by Intent: Tested search vs. social performance, routing high-intent searchers to step-by-step licensure guides while using Facebook/Instagram to build passive awareness of UVA’s expertise, and to promote newly launched B.S.Ed. pathways.
Results and Impact
  • Permanent Site Navigation and Top Traffic Driver: Secured top organic rankings on Google and Bing for core state licensure terms. The hub became so central to student recruitment that it earned a permanent spot in the main navigation and remains one of the site’s top-trafficked pages today, surviving a complete site redesign.
  • 9.5% Google Paid Search CTR: Achieved an exceptional average click-through rate across 89,841 Google Search impressions for the search-insight-driven campaign.
  • High-Engagement Social Reach: Generated 840,704 impressions (252,755 unique reach) with a 2.6% average CTR on Facebook/Instagram for the licensure guide, alongside 451,042 impressions (86,197 reach) for the new B.S.Ed. program launch.
  • Streamlined Admissions Workflows: Integrated the campaign content across Teacher Education admissions communications and automated email nurturing sequences to convert organic and paid traffic into direct counselor contacts.
