How optimizations and search insights drove a 10x CTR lift and jumped average search rank from position 40 to 12

West Virginia University – WVU Online
Overview

This initiative focused on overhauling organic search visibility across degree program pages to adapt to the rise of AI search results while replacing a legacy content-farm model that drove unqualified traffic. By pivoting to an intent-driven strategy, we transformed bloated top-of-funnel visits into a high-intent acquisition channel for a broad online learning audience aged 18 to 60+.

Objectives
  • Future-Proof Degree Pages Against AI Search: Adapt core program pages for AI-driven search results, ensuring authoritative degree and career path information stands out as a primary source.
  • Shift from Quantity to Quality: Phase out high-volume, generic content farm traffic in favor of qualified searchers seeking accredited degree programs and clear career pathways.
  • Capture High-Intent Learners: Optimize organic search touchpoints to reach active prospective students (ages 18–60+) ready to enroll.
  • Elevate Search Visibility: Move average Google rankings out of back-page obscurity into top positions while significantly boosting organic click-through rates.
Approach

We audited our existing page footprint to prune generic content farm blog pages and focused our efforts directly on core degree program landing pages. Using first-party data from Google Search Console and internal on-site search queries, we identified the exact questions, career goals, and program details high-intent prospective students were seeking.

To directly address user intent and strengthen E-E-A-T, we:

  • Built Dedicated Career Sections: Added clear, outcome-focused career guidance to each degree program page detailing potential roles, job titles, and career pathways.
  • Aligned Metadata with Search Intent: Restructured title tags, meta descriptions, and page headlines using Search Console search terms.
  • Optimized Page Architecture: Upgraded E-E-A-T signals across all degree pages to highlight institutional authority and clear degree value.
Results and Impact
  • High-Intent Traffic Shift: Replaced generic content farm traffic with prospective students actively exploring degree programs and career outcomes.
  • Enhanced SERP Relevance and Engagement: Giving searchers direct visibility into career pathways drove higher engagement and a 10x lift in organic click-through rates.
  • AI-Resilient SERP Presence: Positioned core degree program pages as trusted, comprehensive resources that maintain authority in AI-enhanced search layouts.
  • +28 Average Position Jump: Elevated average search rankings from position 40 (page 4) to position 12 across all degrees.
